Circus must be in TownFor those times that you
really need to look over a bus...

Seriously, how do you even get on that contraption?

Thankfully, I kept the ReceiptWhile browsing through one of my favourite
bookstores a couple weeks ago I picked up the book
Grid Systems by Kimberly Elam. I had glanced through one of my professor's copies in my layout class last winter and thought it would be a good reminder on grid structure. After spending a good portion of the evening finishing the book off, I now realize two things:
1) There is a large systematic approach to creating effective designs through grid structure.
2) This book doesn't do a good job of explaining that at all.
Nearly 2/3 of the book is used to explain the very basics of a grid ('you can place things at the top,
or at the bottom,
or even on the sides!') and then showing copious tediously repetitive examples of this. The remaining section of the book shows examples of designers' employing grid systems on real works over the past century. Yet, their grids are so complex and her explanations so utterly bland that you're left leafing through the kindergarten lessons at the beginning, straining to find some hidden secret you missed the first time around. It's a bit like teaching a student addition and then showing them examples from some Austrian Math Guru's Disseration on Theoretical Calculus. 'Don't you get it? It's an integral, you fool!' No, I don't, so maybe you should design a grid that teaches you how to write.

I thought you were on my side, Time? The last couple weeks have been a blur of activity, resulting in my serious lack of bloggation. In that time I've procured an internship at a prime media firm here in town and started tutoring for the Insitute, in addition to my usual class schedule there. Also, my friends Scott, Cori, and Leah made a visit up thisaway for five days last week. I'll expand on that whole trip in a later post (waiting for the arrival of some more pics), but it was an exhaustively fun time. So much so that I've been the epitomy of lazy when I've had a free moment in the last week. Honestly, how much does it cost for a maid? Also, I hate money.

$200 Million worth of LemonsAs much as it saddens me to not see my Royals every October, it gives me nearly equal joy to watch Boss Steinbrenner and the Evil Empire take a dive each Fall. And to watch their vaunted offense look completely stupid against a team that lost 119 games two years ago, well, that's just delicious icing on the cake. A cake that I would love to shove into ole George's sad mug. It gives me faint hope that there is still a measure of fairness in baseball.
Note: Hopefully the Royals are able to gather some hope from watching the Tigers turn around their team in just a couple years. With all the great young hitters in our system (including Alex Gordon, Billy Butler, Ryan Shealy and Mark Teahen) I figure we're just a few solid pitchers away from contending in 2008. Chaaaaaarrge!

Pre-Friday Five1) What TV show(s) do you find yourself watching the most? Most likely it would be SportsCenter, but lately Project Runway as well. Quite a juxtaposition there...
2) What if any TV shows do you own on DVD?All great comedies- NewsRadio (Season 1 & 2), Da Ali G Show (Seasons 1 & 2), and The Complete Office Series (David Brent variety)
3) Can you name your favorite TV show theme song (I would encourage you to make a phone post and sing it to us)?'So what becomes of you my love. When they have finally stripped you of...'
4) Have you ever been on TV and if so for what?Probably in some blimp shot at a sports event.
5) What is your favorite YouTube video (feel free to post a link)?I'm gonna go with Vitalic's Poney Part 1
video for now. Slow-motion dogs get down!

She wants to dance - Not sell pantsIt was bad enough that we had to watch Fred Astaire dancing with a vacuum. Now, the halfwits over at Gap have decided to make Audrey Hepburn dance to AC/DC to sell pants? I can't wait until Gregory Peck sells us power tools to the tune of Nickelback...
