Singing It's Praises
Hooray for Opera! No, I'm not lauding the 'fat Viking lady' kind. Rather, the versatile Norwegian-found web-browsing kind. Opera is, in my opinion, the best web browser on the market right now with tons of useful and fun features, although it hasn't exactly caught on like other 'foxy' browsers. Anyways, It's turning ten years old today and in celebration they are giving out
free registration numbers! Even if you don't get your hands on one of the codes (they're giving them out for 'as long as the party lasts'- whatever that means), it's worth downloading the free browser and giving it a shot.
Uff Da!

Carpool Ton-holeBah! My right hand/wrist has been aching and quivering off-and-on for the last two days straight. My personal nurse (aka Mom) thinks it's probably nerve irritation from being on the computer for too long. I think it's just a royal pain in the arse. I pray I never get Parkinsons...

Gone A'Courtin' ...and I'm back! (from the Outer Edge of the States) At least for a little while. The trip to Seattle turned out smashingly as I accomplished everything I needed. Most importantly, landing a swanky new apartment! It being a first floor studio loft at the Centennial Court in the Belltown district. It's basically a one bedroom apartment and I got it for a lot cheaper than advertised, albeit still not too cheap. My front door opens up right onto the street (well, the sidewalk, some shubbery, and then the street) and the Art Institute is a just a short jaunt down to the harbor. The complex has some excellent amenities too, including a 24-hr exercise room, a covered pool, a rooftop garden, and even a concierge. I'll get some more pictures uploaded as soon as they're developed (probably Thursday). For now, you'll have to use this schematic to supplement my description.
The City itself was surpisingly friendly and generally well-kept. There are tons (I weighed them) of bakeries, restaurants, and coffee shops that I'm eager to test out. I'm also sure to spend a good amount of time in the Pike Place Market (which is a bit like KC's Farmer's Market multiplied by ten). Speaking of which, the Belltown area is a bit like the Plaza if given room to grow. It's located on the Northwest edge of downtown just under the shadow of the Space Needle. I must've visited at just the right time, too, since the weather was in the upper 70s all week with just the right amount of sun. Now, I just have to survive another month of slogging through my mundane job and preparing for the long trek out there.

Leaving on a Jet Plane...Laura left on Saturday for New Zealand for the next couple years. Saying goodbye to her was extremely hard for me, but I was excited to hear yesterday that she landed safely in Maori Country and look forward to seeing what swanky new job she lands in the near future (odds on favorites are "Art Director at New Sassyland Studios" or "Grand Empress of the South Island".) The going away party in Lawrence on Friday night was a fun sendoff, due in part to the Gasarips (i.e.
Pomonas/2) throwing down some delicious riffs in a cramped apartment.
Tomorrow,
I'm leaving for Seattle for four days to visit the
Art Institute and find an apartment for the next couple years (hopefully). I guess I haven't posted on here that I'm moving to the extreme Northwest, so...yeah...I'm moving to Seattle in roughly a month. I'm gonna be going to the aforementioned Art Institute of Seattle to get an Associate's Degree in Interactive Media Design (more commonly Web Design). I've also decided that I'm going to sell my car and just live in the city. The public transport system is pretty extensive there and the school is right on the Puget Sound, so I don't think getting around will be too hard. Plus, not having a car will help me save a good chunk of moolah over the next couple years. So, by this time Friday night I'll be able to tell you a bit more about the Emerald City and also show off my next home. 'Till then...

Take Me! ME!I finally took a trip to
The Island tonight with
Jules and actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The plot (albeit cloned from
Clonus Horror as aforementioned) is a rather fun setting for an action movie: If you assume you can clone someone, it's fair to assume there could be flying motorcycles or that you could fall 50 stories without hurting yourself. Mr. Bay kept his bayisms to a tolerable level as well (those being the rapid-fire, seizure-inducing editing sequences of most of his films). My favorite point in the movie, though, might possibly have been this scene:
Sean Bean fiddles with his futuristic desktop whose entire surface is a computerLaura and I (simultaneously whispering)
: I want that desk.
Ha...*sigh*...also, I want Scarlett Johansson's clone.

I told ya so!I haven't seen
The Island yet (and I probably will), but it still makes me laugh that I made
this exact same claim the first time I saw the preview. Maybe MST3K should countersue for having to sit through the schlockiness of that '76 original.
P.S.
The story underneath it is pretty ironic, too.

Don't worry, nobody is listening anyway
So,
Jules and I watched
Major League last night, as well as some hi-larious outtakes from
Anchorman ("The Skeleton ran out of shampoo in the shower", "The Arsonist had oddly shaped feet" Hahaha!), and we both got to wondering: What happened to the actor who played Cerrano? You know, the crazy Cuban who uses voodoo and worships his little Jobu (not to be confused with yours truly). So a quick check on imdb and my jaw drops to the floor- Cerrano is none other than the All-State guy!
Did anyone else notice that? And are we
really in good hands?

Flickin' OffWell, I finally got a
Flickr account this weekend. This decision was mostly due to the fact that I also purchased a new 3-in-1
printer (It slices, dices, and purees.) Since I don't own a digital camera (or haven't been given one :-p), I'll have to rely on scanning my own pictures for the forseeable future. More coming soon (like the Palazzo!)

Sit Down, Navigator!
I caught
Flight of the Navigator on the tele last night- do you all remember that movie? I used to watch that movie obsessively when I was younger. Kinda funny that Sarah Jessica Parker was in it. I wonder if, when she's lonely, she dyes her hair pink and recites her lines between tears. ("You know, you'd be kinda cute if you were older")
<---I always wanted one of those things

Super Sub to the Rescue!
I guess there are seven Russian submariners
trapped at the bottom of the sea after their propellor got stuck in a fishing net. It happened in Berezovaya Bay, which is approximately 70 kilometers southeast of the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (Great for weekend getaways). They only have 24 hours of oxygen left, which has lead to a hasty rescue operation between the Yanks, Brits, and Ruskies. The best part of the mission is the name of this snazzy sub we're sending out there- The Super Scorpio! I believe it was originally designed for the 'G.I. Joe' program, but has been recommissioned since the evil forces of Cobra became yam farmers.

Where was my Invitation?Apparently the
Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest is an annual competetion where the participants submit bad opening sentences to fictional stories. Sounds like a great idea and these three entries were my favorites:
- Winner: Fantasy Fiction
"Why does every task in the Realm of Zithanor have to be a quest?" Baldak of Erthorn, handyman to the Great Wizard Zarthon, asked rhetorically as he began his journey to find the Holy Hammer of Taloria and the Sacred Nail of Ikthillia so Baldak could hang one of Zarthon's mediocre watercolors, which was an art critique Baldak kept to himself unlike his predecessor, whom Zarthon turned into the Picture Frame of Torathank.
- Winner: Western
As soon as Sherriff Russell heard Bradshaw say, "This town ain't big enough for the both of us," he inadvertantly visualized a tiny chalk-line circle with a town sign that said 'population 1,' and the two of them both trying to stand inside of it rather ineffectively, leaning this way and that, trying to keep their balance without stepping outside of the line, and that was why he was smiling when Bradshaw shot him.
- Dishonorable Mention
A warning to the reader: Tom dies in the end of the story so don't get too attached to him.
P.S.
When people refer to a graham cracker as 'the graham' or 'a graham', it just doesn't get much better than that.
